Step back in time to 1950’s or 1960’s America when life was a lot simpler and slower paced – some would call it idyllic. Bring to mind nostalgic memories of rock ‘n’ roll playing on the jukebox in the Diner, or stopping to fill up the auto at charming old-world roadside gas station. You might have just been an “ankle biter” at the time, but that shouldn’t stop you from recollecting and recreating a nostalgic roadside or small town scene from yesteryear.

Here’s How To Create Your Own Uniquely Realistic Scene For Your
Model Railroad… That You Can Be Proud Of Displaying… Even If
You Have Never Downloaded, Printed, And Constructed Your Own Model Buildings!

These 3 “period-style” scale retro model buildings are reminiscent in appearance of many real world structures common throughout the USA in the 1950’s and 1960’s. The plans to make these scale models are
inexpensive, easy to download, fun to build, and wonderfully realistic when constructed. Here’s how:

  1. Decide how big you want your retro buildings to be: HO scale, OO gauge, or the smaller N scale.
  2. Select the models you want to build: traditional US Diner, retro Steakhouse, or older style Gas Station.
  3. Download and print the plans.
  4. Stick the plans to card (an old discarded cereal pack will be perfect).
  5. Use an Xacto blade (craft knife) to lightly score along the folds.
  6. Use your craft knife to neatly cut out the printed plan.
  7. Fold the card plan to shape and glue the flaps together. Follow the part numbers that are shown on the plan drawing. Clear glue works well, and Super Glue is perfect for small parts.
  8. Clamp the parts together using clothes pins (pegs) until dry.
  9. Adding additional pieces of cardboard inside the assembled model will add strength and support.
  10. Touch up the edges of your HO scale, N scale, or OO scale model with a lead pencil, or use an artist brush.
  11. Applying 2 or 3 very light coats of clear flat varnish will help protect your assembled scale model.
